The National Human Trafficking Resource Center has a wealth of information on human trafficking and offers these tips to identify a victim of human trafficking:
Trafficking Victims May...
- Be accompanied by a controlling person or boss; they may not be speaking on their own behalf
-
Not have control over money, their own schedule, I.D. and/or travel documents
-
Not transport themselves to and from work; they may live and work in the same place
-
Have bruises, injuries, may be fearful and/or overly submissive
When talking with someone you think may be a victim you can ask the following questions:
- What type of work do you do?
- Are you being paid?
- Can you leave your job if you want to?
- Can you come and go as you please?
- Have you or your family been threatened?
- What are your working and living conditions like?
- Where do you sleep and eat?
- Do you have to ask permission to eat/sleep/go to the bathroom?
- Are there locks on the doors/windows so you cannot get out?
- Has your identification or documentation been taken from you?
